Five Herbal Allies for Postpartum Recovery

24th Oct 2023

2 mins read

Herbal remedies have a long history of use in supporting postpartum recovery. Childbirth is an intense physiological event that warrants adequate time and care for healing. Yet, our society often overlooks this need, expecting new mothers to return to daily activities swiftly.

For many forms of physical trauma, rest and physiotherapy are common prescriptions. However, after childbirth, such comprehensive care isn't always readily available, reflecting an area for societal improvement.

From pain relief to infection prevention, boosting milk supply, mood improvement, perineal trauma healing, and sleep aid, herbs can address a wide range of postpartum concerns. Their efficacy is backed by centuries of traditional use and validated by modern scientific research. Before introducing new herbs into your diet, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider or herbalist, as these natural substances can be potent and interact with other medications.

FENUGREEK

Fenugreek has been used since ancient Egyptian times as a galactagogue, or a substance that improves milk production. While it's not a complete solution for low milk supply, many breastfeeding individuals find that teas containing fenugreek provide a helpful boost. It might be beneficial if you're returning to work, building up your milk stash, seeking to maintain your supply, nursing multiple babies, or experiencing a temporary decrease in supply due to factors like menstruation, illness, or a baby's growth spurt.

SCHISANDRA

In the vulnerable postpartum period, the body is more prone to infections. Schisandra, loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols, can enhance your immune system's defenses and promote healing. It's also been used in traditional medicine to support liver health and increase resistance to stress and disease.

HOLY BASIL

Postpartum hormonal changes can lead to mood swings. Holy basil, a renowned adaptogen, can offer mood support, fostering stability and calm amidst the postpartum emotional rollercoaster. It's also a galactagogue that can support milk supply. Typically consumed as tea, holy basil can also be used in tincture form with guidance from a herbalist.

GINSENG ROOT

While Panax ginseng isn't recommended for breastfeeding individuals, Siberian or Indian ginseng is considered safe. Revered in traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng is known for its energy-restoring properties. As an adaptogen, it provides a more sustainable form of energy boost than stimulants like coffee, making it especially beneficial for the fatigue common in the postpartum period.

MORINGA

Moringa, rich in anti-inflammatory properties and nutrients, is a natural alternative to over-the-counter pain relievers and a known galactagogue. It's packed with calcium, protein, potassium, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B, and C, essential for postpartum healing. The United Nations even recommends Moringa for pregnant and nursing individuals. Moringa powder can be added to a variety of foods and beverages, from smoothies and lattes to soups and dips.

Herbs can be potent allies during the postpartum period. By integrating these natural remedies into your recovery plan, you can support your body's healing process and navigate the challenges of this transformative time more smoothly.
